Keeping your receipts, professionally speaking

It’s #FutureGrowth Friday! In my upcoming book, I talk about positioning oneself for opportunities and being change ready. I invite you to consider these questions before I proceed.

  • You want the promotion and other advancement opportunities but do you “keep your receipts”?
  • End of year performance discussions are fast approaching; are you ready?
  • Do you struggle with answering situational questions in interviews?
  • Is it difficult to explain your professional accomplishments on your resume?

Let’s elaborate on the concept of “keeping your receipts” within the context that I am using it, acknowledging that it has broader application than how I use in this post.

The phrase “keeping your receipts” conveys the idea of maintaining proof or documentation of your experiences, actions, or contributions, especially in contexts where these may be questioned or overlooked. This phrase emphasizes accountability and validation, ensuring that individuals can substantiate their claims. It is not only used in reference to career development matters but also personal relationships or social issues.

In professional settings such as in the workplace, it encourages individuals to document their contributions and achievements. By keeping receipts of details like:

  • accomplishments,
  • professional development activities,
  • excellent deliverables,
  • demonstrating leadership with or without titles,
  • successful collaborations
  • exceeding expectations
  • conflicts effectively resolved

professionals can better position themselves during performance reviews, promotions, salary negotiations and job interviews. For example, most of us know that in interviews you are often asked to “Describe a time when…” . You must be clear on your track record and be ready to show that you are ready.

Fortunately, I will soon be offering a free career journal with some important prompts to ensure that you are tracking what will position you for your next level or next opportunity.

Bonus: you will have it organized in a way that you are ready for your performance review, promotion discussion and job interviews. Stay tuned!
